Sluggishness: Performance Dip

I have a 2xE5-2630L v2 @ 2.40GHz with 4xSSD H/W RAID-10. Technically that 24 cores at 2.6 Ghz.

I am experiencing performance dip, sluggish cPanel interface experience as soon as the load crosses 4 or 5

Higher load could be due to backups or higher traffic, same sluggishness is experienced. Wondering what the point to 2CPU, 24Core if dip happens after a load of only 4 or 5?

What should I be looking at or did I choose an incorrect config?

Dedicated for image/photo site

My budget is 150-200$ for one server, I can buy max 5 servers because my storage already nearly 10TB.

- I am currently using HDD storage - 2x2 TB HDD and make it become raid 0 to use full 4 TB HDD on /root disk, but photos load very slow and blur ( customers load, not servers load ) when servers had nearly 3 TB/4 TB.

So anyone recommend best dedicated for my budget and it can load fast?

Thank all for support!

What do you consider appropriate maximum CPU load for PHP-FPM server with hyperthreading on and off?

Hello,

What do you consider appropriate maximum CPU load for PHP-FPM server with hyperthreading on and off?

With hyperthreading off, I consider the load linear, and consider about up to 70% safe, with a 30% safety margin.
With hyperthreading on, I noticed with experience and on prior google searches that the load % does not go up linearly and increases more rapidly at high values, so I consider up to 50% safe, since at above 50% the percentage increases more rapidly than under 50%.

But, I ask this because I may be to conservative as I noticed many Cloud autoscaling guides use 60~70% as a scale out threshold, and Cloud servers usually have hyperthreading on.
Personally I had always considered 60~70% dangerous.

CPU Clock Speed VS Amount of Cores

Hi there everyone,

I currently have a VPS that is hosting approximately 50 cPanel accounts (WordPress sites), and I want to upgrade to a dedicated to host more accounts/WordPress sites.

My question is, what should I focus on: Higher clock speed, or lower clock speed but more cores?

Specifically:

1. Intel Xeon E3-1240 V6 (3.70GHz 8MB Cache) w 32GB DDR4 RAM [4 cores]
or
2. 2x Intel Xeon E5-2640 (2.50GHz 15MB Cache) w 32GB DDR3 RAM [2x8 = 16 cores]

I can't figure it out. The more I Google it, the more confused I get.

Or should I just get a second VPS? The stats for my current VPS is 6 cores @ 2.60 gHz.

Thanks in advance!

PS. Some of the WordPress sites have minimal traffic if any at all, and some have 5k unique visitors per day. Cloudflare and caching is being used on all of them.

Best method to connect 24 SSDs for software RAID?

Hello,

I have been using 3108 RAID controllers with supermicro servers for a long time.
It works fine.

However, due to the increase in SSD performance, I was always aware that software RAID will probably be better in performance along with some filesystems such as ZFS having additional unique advantages.
So I am finally considering making the leap from hardware RAID to software RAID, especially since NVME drives from what I know don't even have hardware RAID support.

In the past when connecting many drives I noticed I have to setup each signle drive as a RAID 0 through the RAID card, which I think would decrease performance.

So I have to questions regarding best method to connect 24 SSDs for software RAID?

1.
What is the standard way of connecting 24 SATA SSDs to a storage server and use each drive individually and/or setup as software raid?
From what I know a RAID card such as 3108 is usually needed to connect so many drives to the mainboard.

2.
How does 24 nvme drives work in Storage servers that support it? Does mainboard have shared PCIe lanes that are connected with the nvme drives?

Thank you.

See the used DNS in browser, or force load the web with a specific dns

Hi,

In last days I have a problem when try to load webs from a old server, I did a some configurations in DNS and I think is solved.

But I need test him to be sure. I have 3 DNS in the old server and I want check if all work correctly.

How can I check the used DNS in my browser when I open the web?. If cannot see this, Can I force load the web with a specific dns?.

Thank you very much. Have a nice day.

How to choose right server configuration

Hi

I am tasked to purchase a new server for our network. Basically the idea is to consolidate 2 servers with VMs into one more powerful server.
Current configuration is 2xE5-2680v4 with 128GB ram per server.

I am thinking about something like AMD Epyc 7702P with 256GB of memory, but I am not completely sure about it. Yes, this server has lots of cores, but the base clock speed of this CPU is lower than what we currently have.
I did some research and this CPU seems to be more powerful compared on a sheet, but is it on reality?

We are mainly using those servers for hosting our websites, some big databases. My question is do you think we will see significant performance increase if we do this upgrade, beside saving some money on datacenter costs (consolidating 4U into 1U server)?

Does server virtualization (Virtuozzo) impact server performance?

I'm currently designing a new server architecture in colab with a server tech, we'll need 4 dedicated servers and he has recommended to setup server virtualization via Virtuozzo, his reasoning is that it will make it easy to migrate to better hardware when needed. This seems like a good idea but some devs are telling my that it will degrade the performance of the boxes is this true? His plan is to install OS on 2 x SATA(Raid 1) drives and then place the virtualization on 2 x SSD's (Raid 1)
I would like a 2nd opinion on this,
Does the virtualization degrade performance, IF it does then by how much? Is it really this convenient to use such a virtualization setup in reference to migration? Any other thing to consider?

Thanks!

Dual Xeon Silver 4214 VS AMD Threadripper 3960X

Hey, I've been using Dual Dual Xeon Silver 4214's for my dedicated server and paying about $270 a month but the power isn't there for me.
It's base clockspeed is only 2.2GHz and 3.2GHz turbo.

I've decided to use another company and now pay $400 a month for a AMD Threadripper 3960X which has 24 cores (same as Dual Silvers 4142) but a much higher clockspeed.
The rest of the specs are about the same for both companies.

Would you say it's a good choice and how much better performance can I expect (if any lol, sorry for being a nub)?

Patriot Burst SSds any experience with them on servers in hardware raid?

I been using Crucial mx500s and they work fine, but need to change them out about every year just keep safe on nand wear on the hosting server. As was going go with higher wear drive to get 2 or 3+ years, but not seeing any available. I have used Patriot SSds in the past and notice they seem to fail with drive still readable to recover on home user computers more often then other drives in my personal experience. SO checking I notice the nand write endurance is over double of crucial. So I was just wondering if anyone has tried the Patriot burst on their servers or not and experience they have had. I am considering trying a couple.

Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

Liquidweb technicians removed my scripts and broke sites :)

Welp, so there were some CPU load issues yesterday and I asked for help. While I was sleeping, someone from Liquidweb thought it will be a good idea (without my permissions) to uninstall mod_pagespeed and reinstall something else.

Of course, the version I had before was not the same that they have reinstalled or something else went wrong and my sites are all have been broken ever since. Did they even bother to check if the mod pagespeed was functioning like it was supposed to? Of course not. The CPU load is still here except now I also have broken cache, images not loading, and a support reply of something along the lines of "nah, we can't install the version you want as we don't support it".

Thanks, guys.
