OVH is forcing me to pay $2k upfront for a server I don't plan on using.

I seriously can't believe what I'm going through.
Back in 2019, I decided to purchase a RISE-3 Server for 1 year, paid approximately 1.6k EUR. Fast forward to 2020, I have been paying this server month to month ( I didn't renew the yearly contract and instead decided to pay month by month). All went smooth until this month when I decided that I no longer needed this machine.
For some reason, OVH is bringing up the contract from 2019 and demanding that I pay 1.6k EUR for the server until 2022, they didn't provide any resolution, only paying the bill.

What's up with OVH??? This is just messed up for a small company like ours, I simply can't afford to pay that right now and they are still telling me that I have to.

Has OVH forced anyone else to 12 month contract + billed upfront?

Originally took these servers out on a 12 month contract and paid up front as they gave good discounts for that.

When renewal time was due I noticed there was almost no discount when paying for 12 months upfront/12m commitment so I changed my billing to monthly and no 12 month commitment.

Their support confirmed there is only a discount when renewing if there is a commitment. After some quick maths the discount worked out to be a few bucks a month, not worth committing 12 months for such a small saving.

Either way, I was on this monthly billing/renewal for a few months and then randomly OVH swapped my servers to a 12 month commitment and charged me 12 months upfront. Just about fell out my chair when I seen this bill.

I seen the post recently about a guy that forgot to swap to a monthly contract after the annual one ended - This isn't my case though. I swapped to a monthly billing.

Has anyone else heard of this happening?

Dual Xeon Silver 4214 VS AMD Threadripper 3960X

Hey, I've been using Dual Dual Xeon Silver 4214's for my dedicated server and paying about $270 a month but the power isn't there for me.
It's base clockspeed is only 2.2GHz and 3.2GHz turbo.

I've decided to use another company and now pay $400 a month for a AMD Threadripper 3960X which has 24 cores (same as Dual Silvers 4142) but a much higher clockspeed.
The rest of the specs are about the same for both companies.

Would you say it's a good choice and how much better performance can I expect (if any lol, sorry for being a nub)?

What makes a server fast? And what is best dedicated managed Cpanel server under 180$?

Not sure if this is the right category.. I want to know what makes a server speedy. My issue is, I tried about 6 servers the last 6 months.

Reseller Hostmantis (5$ a month)
VPS cloudcone 10 core 16 GB ram (50$) a month + cpanel (15$) + litespeed (30$) a month
VPS from a dutch guy, 8 core, 16GB ram, directadmin (70 a month)
Cloudcone VPS: 10 cores, 60GB ram, Cpanel + litespeed = like 70 a month).
Wpprovider (claims to have to fastest dutch hosting): 25,- a month.
Neostrada magento hosting (6 core, 8GB ram, cpanel = 20,- a month)

Believe it or not, but the freaking 5$ per month SHARED (!!!!) RESELLER (!!!!!) is the fastest of them all. And I really don't understand how that is possible. Is there anybody who can explain to me what makes a server fast? First I thought it was litespeed, so i bought a litespeed license for by VPS'ses. Then I thought it was the lack of RAM, so i went to Contabo with 60 freaking GB of ram WITH litespeed. And even that is slower if I 1:1 compare it with a 100% duplicated site on that Hostmantis reseller package...

Then a guy from Asia who tried to improve the pagespeed for a webshop copied the site to his dedicated server and the results were INSANELY fast. I asked him his config and he said:

2 X Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650
32 Cores
64 GB ram
2 X SSD Drive

He said he didn't had Litespeed, only Memcache installed.

Is there anybody who can tell me what makes a server fast? Is it the RAM? the CPU? The managing? The location? The LITEspeed/Memcached/Redis? And when does it make sense to get a Dedicated server instead of a VPS?

About me: As side job I build websites. Most of them very easy, 3 page wordpress sites with no visitors. I host about 60. They don't really care about speed, cause they are happy if there are There are some bigger clients (3 with a woocommerce webshop, 1 with a magento webshop) for which speed IS important.

What I would like is
THE FASTEST Server possible for my amount
At least 500GB SSD storage
Managed
Backups remotely (and something like JEtbackup)
Softacalous
Cpanel + WHM (100 accounts)
Budget: Under like 180$ for all (if that is anyway possible).

Recomendations about servers

Hello people i am working to make a vps service.

I allready started with 4 Xeon E3-1230/40 Servers with 16 gb ram and 500 gb ssd 5 ip usables - i am paying now 30$ month for each server ( 120$ total )

i was looking for another provider with better protection anti ddos , better network , better location...

I look for a new provider with this config Dual Xeon E5-2430 - 64 GB RAM - 3 x500 GB SSD... 100$ month. 20 IPs

I have a very tight budget because I have very low prices....

I just don't want to degrade the performance of the service to my clients, I don't oversell on any server.

I am using vmware esxi and proxmox .... and all my vps are using windows server

any recomendation o provider is welcome.

Thanks

LeaseWeb Deutschland takes my case to court in Amsterdam. Advise is needed.

Hi,

The problem started in 2019 when they redesigned their admin interface. We started having problems with not being able to see current invoices, we received multiple invoices for the same servers, and invoices which did not specify which equipment they was for.

Since after several calls and emails we still could not get an answer on which invoices were correct and which were incorrect, our servers were deactivated.

We then chose to end our collaboration with LeaseWeb. The last contact we had with LeaseWeb was 2019-08-19 when we sent the following email:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Leaseweb,

As a customer we are very unhappy with your lack of responses to our questions, emails, and customer service. We have had nothing but problems since you upgraded / migrated / modified the customer portal as of April 8th.

We will not pay any of the invoices below, (amount of ~€530) and we do not want to do any more business with you. It has taken too much of our time and effort to sort out your problems.

We recently paid €613.69 for a 12 month contract for the our DE server. You are free to cancel/disconnect this server and use the €613.69 to pay any due invoices, even those that does not specify which equipment they refer to, and even those who have arisen because you do not answer the questions we have.

We no longer have any confidence in you as a company, and we will not spend any more time solving problems for continued collaboration with your company.

Regards
xxx xxxx

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The time goes any we are very happy with the other hosting provided that se moved to.

But, In December 2020, I received a letter from Leaseweb's debt collection company TKB INCASSO regarding an invoice that was created at the end of 2020 for the amount of € 676.19 and applies to a new advance-payment for a new period for the server we had in DE which was cancelled.

We dispute the invoice to both TKB and Leaseweb, but neither of these has responded.

Yesterday I received a second letter (via regular post) from TKB INCASSO. They will bring the amount to court in Amsterdam if I don't wire the amount before 2021-01-27.

Following url is a PDF of this letter: docdro.id/r1KYA4N (Add http if needed)

I'm in desperate need for help. From what I understand, the court in Amsterdam will rule in LeaseWeb's favor if I cannot be present in person to dispute the invoice.

What should/can I do?

Is there such a thing as AFFORDABLE admin/management WITH Good customer service...or nah?

I have been trying to find server admins for a Cpanel dedicated machine.

I find my experience has been the following in the last few years.

1) CHEAP -- great if nothing is needed. Low skills, low service. Outsourced to 3rd world countries. Only really available to do work during flip-flop hours (I am in USA). Never worth it in the end.

2) Affordable with either

a) GREAT service and low skills (still outsourcing to cheap freelancers?)
or
b) Poor service and low skills

3) Individual, who's pricing changes, availability changes, or business communications are not fully professional.

Is there anyone out there that has GREAT SERVICE and DECENT Pricing? or do I just need to bite it and pay $200 a month (twice the cost of the server lease) for decent administrative services?

My most recent and present experience is with a provider here from WHT. They are in the EU. Their reps log in from Germany and Greece. Usually in the US daytime, work is not done.

They told me they were UNABLE to repair the Kernel. Somehow, a previous admin had installed kernalcare and they claim it was removed and now causing errors in csf/lfd. (they didn't know how to fix it)
My only solution was to reinstall os or buy a New server from them.

Let me add, they were very pushy on how "old" my machine was and that was the reason support was slow.

they had problems backing up the system and couldn't guarantee it would work right again unless I bought anew server from them.

I didn't, they are in the EU and I am in the US, so not worth the GDPR compliance hassles.

So Did the reinstall with my DC.

Guess what, same problems...and more. For days. Their "pro-active" admin didn't catch these errors. I had to report them. eventually many of them got them fixed.

Except now, most sites are NOT working properly.

Basic things like .htaccess file and default.htm not recognized and working.

They told me because there are so many possibilities of php/configurations, we need to go through every site and test every function, then let them know, site by site, issue by issue.

Except they all worked fine before...

I have lost a LOT OF TIME and MONEY with this.

So, now, once again, looking for a company that can work with CPANEL and not blame the last admin or the server on their inability to manage it.

Anyone else have this issue?

how did you resolve it, just keep trying and trying, month after month with company after company?

Normally, I would just go with a dedicated machine that came with management. I didn't have these problems when I did. But the servers cost 3 times as much.

I guess I am asking, am I missing something or Is this just part of saving money on a dedi? No way around it except to just pay for the topline?

Another Review of Lousy Customer Service, This Time at Total Server Solutions/Performive

I posted a TrustPilot review a few days ago describing my recent experience with Performive/Total Server Solutions. I have summarized that review here because I have benefitted from honest WHT reviews and feedback over the years which have helped me find great services as well as undesirable services to avoid. I'd like to repay the favor.

I was a big fan of Certified Hosting. I signed up for a budget dedicated server with them in 2011. The signup/setup was smooth and speedy, their data center speeds were superb, and their tech support was fabulous. In late 2018, Certified was acquired by Total Server Solutions, now called Performive. It wasn't long before tech support went downhill. Since then, I've had to contact TSS/Performive repeatedly about downtime and other problems that kept popping up every few months and never seemed to get resolved. However, I dreaded the chore of finding a new server host and migrating to another machine, so I grit my teeth and dealt with it.

On 03/12/2021, I was auto-billed by Performive for my customary six months of prepaid service at my negotiated rate of $75 a month. As usual, they charged $450 to my credit card. However, a month later, a guy I'd never heard of blasted into my inbox declaring himself to be my new sales rep and spouting dire warnings that my server had reached its "end of life," I was in breach of various banking compliance laws, a terrible security meltdown could happen at any moment, and I MUST upgrade my server immediately!!! I knew where this was going, and my suspicion was confirmed when Performive DOUBLED my monthly rate and demanded that I sign a 36-month contract at this new, inflated rate. They also switched me from managed to unmanaged and wanted to upcharge me to make the server managed again.

To be clear, this was completely unacceptable. I stated that the time to re-negotiate a six-month prepaid rate is BEFORE I've been charged and paid in advance, not a month later. Moreover, Certified had agreed to keep my server hardware and software up-to-date, and if TSS/Performive had allowed it to become an antiquated piece of junk with gaping security vulnerabilities as they claimed, the liability for that was on them. Nevertheless, I was given until May 31 to accept the mandatory upgrade and doubling of my monthly rate, which I declined. I agreed to vacate the server by May 12, the end of my second prepaid month, which left a $300 credit for the four prepaid months which Performive declined to provide.

I spent ten sleepless nights finding a new server hosting firm and migrating my web content, which I didn't plan on doing at a very difficult time of health and other personal issues. But I got it done and vacated Performive's server on schedule. Since then, I have sent multiple emails to their Billing and Sales departments asking that my $300 credit be promptly refunded. ALL of those emails to both departments have met with dead silence. Adding insult to injury, Performive emailed me three robo-surveys asking "How Are We Doing?" This is such a demeaning and insulting way to treat a 10-year customer.

Last Friday, I sent another refund demand, which I expect Performive's missing-in-action billing department and sales staff will again ignore. So, when my June 4 deadline to refund my $300 credit passes, I'm wondering if my 30-day Notice of Intent to Sue will bring another robo-survey asking, "How Are We Doing?"

Possible scam by PhoenixNAP

I attempted to sign up with PhoenixNAP at the very beginning of July, at the urging of a friend who was having trouble signing us up at OVH. Boy, was that a mistake.

I set up our account, and attempted to register for a 12 month reservation of a server configuration. It signed me up for 12 months... of a completely different server configuration. So I cancelled that.

Then friend attempted to use the account to sign up for the originally intended server configuration. It signed us up for 12 months of yet a different unwanted server configuration. So we cancelled that as well.

At this point, I decided we should not do business with PhoenixNAP, and went with OVH instead, paying with my Privacy.com virtual card allocated specifically for OVH. PhoenixNAP attempted to swing me back to working with them, but made no mention of the two reservations.

I removed my card information from CCBill, a business that Google searches would seem to indicate is a questionable billing service. They managed to bill my card regardless, so I reported them to my bank and cancelled the card and got a replacement. PhoenixNAP returned the money and my bank eventually removed the temporary credit they gave me.

I refuse to give any further details to either PhoenixNAP or CCBill now. They continue to email me multiple times per week with my "late payment" notices for these reservations for server configurations that were not only wrong, but that I have yet to use, and no longer want anyway.

Please help compare these dedicated server hosts...

I'm a small business owner and developer since 2003. We have a few dedicated servers, each one with a different host. One of these hosts was sold and the new owner wants us to use a new server in a new location. We are considering switching to another host. This server runs some important client web sites, our own site, and web apps we're developing.

What we're looking for:
- unmanaged bare metal dedicated server, Intel Xeon 4c/8t minimum, 6 or 8 core preferred
- 16GB RAM, 32GB RAM preferred
- 1TB (or 960GB) SSD, 2 x SSD software RAID preferred
- FreeBSD 11 or 12 (our other servers are FreeBSD 11.4)
- $140/month or less (we're paying $130/month now for the current server, no SSD, 16GB)
- US data center, east coast preferred

Obviously we want a decent data center and good customer support but we also want a company who is going to be around for the next 10 years and isn't likely to be bought up by some Wall Street investment firm who doesn't care about the customers of the smaller hosting firms they're purchasing.

Hosts I'm researching:
- Vultr
- OVHcloud (the US branch)
- Linode
- Hivelocity

So far, OVH seems to have the exact hardware, price point, and data center but their billing system worries me.

If you have any experience with these hosts, good or bad, please share. If you work for one of these hosts, I'm open to offers.

thanks,

Robert

Alternatives to LiquidWeb Cloud Dedicated (Managed WHM/cPanel)

Host recommendations needed. Let me start by saying, THANKS in advance for your replies.

I own a (very) small US-based business and my website/email hosting has been with LiquidWeb since they acquired my previous host WiredTree.

LiquidWeb ignored a support ticket yesterday and as my yearly payment comes due next week I thought I probably owe it to myself to at least evaluate my options before it renews.

My biggest priority is knowing I have good managed support when I need it. Problem is, having support tickets linger in the cue for a day or so until I call/chat them and ask when it's going to get looked at has been a pretty constant problem since day one. And it's not like I'm inundating them with support tickets either. My website development has been on hold the past couple years due to personal reasons, so this might be the first support ticket I've even opened this year other than asking them to whitelist an IP because their automated process for that doesn't work.

Looks like I'm paying about $2,400/year for a Cloud Dedicated server and $800/year for a second smaller plan (old WiredTree VPS plan).

The main server appears to be 8 core (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1271 v3 @ 3.60GHz) with a 24/900/5 config (I think). I'm not currently taxing the box at all; it's a total overkill in all regards. One downside to LiquidWeb is at the time I moved this server from a VPS to this plan I was kind of forced into a much, much higher plan than I really needed because every option in between had the same limited disk space my VPS had and the only reason I needed to upgrade was that I was pushing disk limits.

As such, being able to scale up or down in the future without having to make huge jumps is also important.

As of right now, the second (VPS) server could easily be absorbed by the first. I actually intended to do that a year ago when my bill came due but then life got in the way and it fell through the cracks.

Both my boxes are managed CentOS/WHM/cPanel with Root access. I did not migrate away from cPanel when the prices went up. If there's something legitimately better than cPanel I'm happy to evaluate it, but until then it's the devil I know.

Prior to WiredTree/LiquidWeb I had 2 VPS plans at ServInt. Originally ServInt was excellent... until they weren't. But even after they outsourced their support overseas, I really still didn't have support issues. I left ServInt because my boxes were aging badly and all signs said the company was in trouble. I will also say my brief experience with WiredTree support before they got bought out was amazing.

Before ServInt I was with Inmotion Hosting (originally shared hosting then a VPS albeit without Root access). I will say I have no desire to work with any host that sells shared plans again.

As far as budget is concerned, I can afford what I'm currently paying. Yes I'd love to be paying less although that's not what's driving this search. If I stay with LiquidWeb, I'll migrate the VPS into the Cloud Dedicated and downsize to $2,400/year. If I'm paying less elsewhere, I expect it's because I downsized the Cloud Dedicated server's specs.

When I left ServInt for WiredTree, recommendations from this site caused me to have a short list of WiredTree, KnownHost, FutureHosting and LiquidWeb. I've seen recent recommendations in other threads for KnownHost and BigScoots, so that's where my current short list begins. Any recommendations are appreciated.
