Dedicated server hardware recommendations

My DC (New Continuum, great DC with very friendly staff by the way, highly recommended if you need a DC in Chicago suburbs) just informed me that my server which has been there since 2012, is completely dead with no LED turns on when power buttons are pressed. Coincidentally I have another server rented from OVH Strasburg so it is really great timing...

Grief aside, I guess I am now becoming an unwilling buyer for another server hardware.

The server that was just dead was a HP DL160 G6 with a single INTEL XEON E5504 CPU and RAID10 with 4x320GB HDD, the contract I have with DC is for 1U rackmount and 1amp of power. The server has 5-6 VMWare VMs (mixture between Windows Server 2008 and Debian) installed and is for my personal use only (running a mixture of Python/MS-SQL/MySQL), no deep learning or big data crazy stuff. If I can choose to upgrade I would like to upgrade to a faster CPU (and obviously larger disk space) - while keeping it under 1amp.

My budget is around 700 USD (since this was how much I paid 9 years ago). I have not followed up with server hardware specs (this is my one and only owned server, the others are all rented) for the past 9 years so apologies in advance if I sound quite ignorant.

So given all the above, my questions for the wise folks in WHT a

1. What is a sample "modern" hardware spec I can get with my budget and with my current service level (1U and 1amp of power)? Is there any brand/model you'd recommend? I can buy parts separately and ship to DC as well since I have free remote hands but ideally would prefer to buy a pre-built server like the HP I had before.

2. Is there any value in savage at least part of the dead server (CPU/RAM, etc, I suspect the issue is probably just a fried motherboard or PSU, but not sure if I should buy another PSU to send to DC) rather than having it tossed away for good?

Forgot to mention I'd prefer to buy the server in US (ideally located close to Chicago) so that I don't have to pay for 1000 bucks for shipping and wait for 5 months (especially given this year), I know there are (or at least there used to be) better deals out of Europe but that's a bit too far for me.

Of course if there is any suggestion you might have to try to see if the server could be brought back from dead please kindly share as well. No LED lights light on at the moment.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

Server Specs for home dedicated server

Hi all,

I'm new here and this my first post

So I'd like to get my own dedicated server and set it up at home to be used for games only but I have no idea what kind of specs that is needed when it comes to servers and the distribution of system resources such as CPU, RAM etc. Storage is self explained obviously.
I'm looking to host like a Minecraft server, 7 days to die server, Rust server etc but in general, if possible to say, how many game servers can you run on a single machine?
What is a good server Intel Xeon CPU these days that is not overkilling my needs to run a few game servers on the machine? Is 64 GB of RAM enough to start with?
What is best for my needs when it comes to the server type like a tower or a rack?

I'm just trying to get an estimated cost to set this all up and i'm a bit overwhelmed what is enough and not so my apologies if I don't provide much information so if you need any more details in order to assist, let me know and I'd be happy to be more specific in the topic .
Internet speed is not an issue as I have 1 Gbit up and down.

Thanks in advance!

Dedioutlet.com most incompetent provider I've ever encountered.

I rented a dedicated server about 6 months ago and at the beginning it wasn't really any issues.
Heres the downtime report https://i.imgur.com/mE5V2eJ.png

At the beginning i encountered few downtimes but that was due their network being compromised and it can happend sometimes and the owner promise they will upgrade their infrastructure to fix this issue.
After few months after, my server lost power and rebooted. The owner replied back that they will fix this issue but the same issue occured again however their provided reason at that time was because their UPS malfunctioned.
Few more downtimes after that incident, they said, fire department told them to shutdown their power, while their electricity provider had an occuring issues beyond their help. Excuses keep piling on and its almost as if they dont even have UPS.

Last year october and november my server started to randomely reboot with seemlingly no explanation. I hired sysadmin and they couldnt find an issue. They suggested this could be a hardware issue. Due to the hardware parts it would take provider months before the provider can replace all the hardwares so i had to wait.
And waiting i did, and until when the day finally arrived. From all my exchanges with this company, ive only talked with the actual owner. This seems to be really a one man show. Worst is that this owner is incompetent.

So we went through with the server swap, changing ssd to the new server hardware. However issue occured with the new hardware enviroment not recognizing my ssd partitions. Sysadmin couldnt do much in rescue mode as they cant gain the error logs which dracut provided in the failure mode.
The issue is that the dracut log is generated in a volatile disk path so ifwe rebooted the logs would be gone.

The owner had significant issues where the server didnt recognize the flash drives so we couldnt export the logs.
This was a 24 hours conversation exchange. We litterally end up googling. Even the owner was googling and asking if a centos forum post could be the solution.

I asked if they can setup a KVM so my sysadmin can access the dracut logs.
24 hours after, the owner still has problem setting up kvm.
That was my last patience with this provider. I told him to change back to the old server hardware and the server was online again. I ordered a new server from a different provider(reliablehostingservices.net) and did rsync and terminated my server with dedioutlet.

The sheer amount of incompetence is just baffling. Owner googling for solution, trying to ask his "developer" on how to fix kvm setup to no avail.

Create Linux VPS on Windows (Hyper-V) Dedicated Server

Hi there,

I'm currently struggling with creating a VPS on a Dedicated server.

I've purchased quite a high spec Dedicated server which is running Windows 2019 with Hyper-V installed and I'm looking at installing Ubuntu 16.04 and running it as a VPS off of the Dedicated server so I can allow my friends to make use of the server. I've purchased a failover IP address and I've attached it to the main Dedicated server but I'm a bit confused on how I am suppose to tell Hyper-V to use the additional IP only in that one VM box.

Please feel free to burn me for my stupidity but I could really do with some advice - thank you in advance.

Kind regards,
Jack R

Welp, Guess I need a Managed Dedicated Server Provider...who do you recommend?

This current admin company is driving me insane! They are literally making my server worse...

I have lost so much money in production time of not being able to develop websites!

This sever is for basic business sites.

So I am moving this server from dedicated self-managed (with 3rd party admin) and now need a fully managed server.

This is just to host multiple websites. so we very rarely have issues on the server.

I need cpanel/whm

I am used to having multiple processors with multiple cores, but they are quite old, so maybe the more powerful processors can beat it?

It's an old server but has been a workhorse for development with no real issues.

i'd like the equivalent or better. Ideally under $200 month ($150 would be great!)

-- is this even possible?

who do you recommend? Any black friday/cyber Monday specials?

hardware or mdadm raid10 ?

Hi,

if i have 8 SATA3 SSD, for shared hosting,
i want to run cloudlinux and cpanel on it.

compare hardware raid card with mdadm raid10,
do you recommend which one ?

i make searching,

1. some people say raid card will be quicker,
but cpu are quick now, does it really have the difference ?

2. some people say raid card has battery and mdadm only server power,
when server's power fail,
mdadm's raid data may break,is it real ?

How do you choose a budget server?

The common complaint about budget providers is usually bad support, which is quite understandable (they have to cut all expenses).

You can check the server quality on the first day, but I believe two problems are critical: hardware failure and network outage. You can always restore a website from the remote backup, but you do not know if you should wait for the server or give up and change the DNS pointing somewhere else.

There are a few well-known budget providers, but there are many small providers (usually one-man army) which offer decent servers. I am an avid supporter of small businesses in general.

1. How do you find such small providers?
2. How do you check/trust them?

Are servers with better CPU use newer hardware such as RAM, SSD and mainboard?

Hello,

I wish to rent a new server which can be used 7 to 8 years, if I rent a EPYC 7502P server, will its other hardware newer than E-2176G server's ?

Thanks a lot.
